Oh sorry -- I guess I was skimming rather than reading -- Nope -- Area light is not allowed (Area shadow is), so area speculars aren't going to work anyway. Use a card and reflections to pull off the area highlight. If you need a softer highlight (area highlight with a feathered penumbra edge), use a bitmap on the card or just use glossy reflections on the object reflecting the card.
Remember, specular highlights are just "faked" reflections of your lightsources in the scene, so rather than fake them, put in bright cards so that you can see the highlights.
